BRANCHING BODIES

DEC 2022

‘Branching Bodies’ focuses on the lack of local workers in the Lambeth area. The ideas and design hope to create a space for the residents of the area to grow and develop individually and as a community. With a large number of residential spaces, Lambeth has notably had a focus on ‘live, work and play’ being an option for all residents but this just isn’t happening. Around 9.5% of Lambeth’s population is leaving in the day to work elsewhere despite there being a high demand of a variety of workers in the community. The idea of ‘Branching Bodies’ is to extend peoples knowledge of available careers and what is involved in them, giving a taster of another possible route – or Branch – that they could take. As much of Lambeth’s population is 20 – 29, users are at an age where they would have just left schooling or been in a career for a few years but are now looking for a change or some different experience. This makes it the perfect space for reaching out to those who are curious (and those who are not) to express what their options are.

This is all brought together in ‘The Threshold’, a design for a pavilion advertisement space. The purpose of a threshold is to entice a user into a space, it is the space between spaces where interactions happen unintentionally. The form of the design hopes to circulate people onto the site with its swooping curves, but also just allow people to pass through but take notice of the structure. Inspired by the Lambeth Ribbon Logo (Meaning ‘Togetherness, Pride, Energy and Openness’), it seems right to use this is an opening for a space for the people. The design is created with transportation in mind, with all parts being detachable so the pavilion can be taken apart and move elsewhere if necessary – making a more long lasting design. The design also hopes to set a new form of career advertisement by taking inspiration form the short videos and clips we see common on social media now as a way of presenting job opportunities in a more exciting and informative way on boards places across the threshold.
