LAMBETH
LIVING LAMBETH
MAY 2023
‘Live Lambeth’ aims to create a civic hub that’s sympathetic of the communities’ struggles. As can be seen in ‘Branching Bodies’, employment demands highlight a gap in the agricultural sector – A major issue considering the increasing population worldwide. Notably, Lambeth is one of the top 50% of most food deprived areas in all the UK and lack green space (one of the areas the locals highlighted that they wanted). Taking the growing methods and health benefits of urban farming explored in ‘Roots of the Community’ this Civic Hub aims to incorporate spaces for growth and cooking of vegetables and fruits in an innovate way that inspires the next generation of farmers.
To accommodate the other jobs found lacking in the area there is an adaptive workspace, allowing a turnover of different professions to fill the space as they find necessary. Taking in modular and adaptive design, this space is to be a flexible as possible to be sustainable for years to come. Themes of health work styles covered in the case study Portcullis House expanded to this design with the consideration of natural planting, sunlight, communication spaces and flexible working environments.
With a focus on workers and those looking to choose a career, ‘Live Lambeth’ is designed for 20-30 year old in mind. Although this is the main age demographic in Lambeth, most activities are focused at the younger or older age groups. To follow the theme of growth (vertical movement), this space poses the room for rock climbing to the community. As a fun exercise activity that builds muscle and endurance, this is a fun alternative to other exercise but still keeps users fit. The consideration of movements you must take also sharpens the mind. Aside from the health benefits, rock climbing is a very social activity – you put trust in your partners and create a bonding experience.
Overall, ‘Live Lambeth’ is a Health Hub for the use of the community by providing areas they need and want to enjoy. The information hub and vegetable collection allows users the access to healthy options for their mind and body, while the café and rock climbing create a social space to interact and have fun alongside their own farm.
