HACKNEY WICK

WE STILL RESIDE

DEC 2023

Located in Hackney Wick, the site sits on the border of the older industrial and creative areas and the newly developed sites by the Olympic Park creating a setting with a mixture of wealthy and poor. ‘We still reside’ focuses on creating a safe and sheltered space for the homeless of the area. As a problem growing out of control since the new developments have taken over, homeless charities are struggling between demand and funding to provide much needed facilities. Looking into the needs of Hackney Winter Night shelter the pavilion presents space for feeding and serving the community while being conscious of their struggles with shelters, such as feelings of being trapped and losing control of their own paths.

Designed to give the user a choice, the pavilion is made of modular seats to allow the space to grow as more people require help. Each element uses a hand crank to turn the façade into a seating element while providing necessary protection from the wind, sun, and rain. With seating provided in singles, pairs, or larger groups the aim is to allow users to experience the space in a way they feel comfortable which includes moving the facades as they see fit.

The project also looks at recycled materials as a cheap and easily accessible building material, with paint tins forming the façade and roof tiles of structure to link in with the creative environment of Hackney Wick.
